Bicarbonate test

Introduction

A bicarbonate test, also known as a CO2 test, is used to detect electrolyte imbalances or changes in blood acidity (pH).

It’s usually part of a series of tests that are used to investigate the kidney (renal profile).

A bicarbonate test may be carried out as part of
a routine physical examination or it may be recommended if you’re experiencing symptoms such as:

  • weakness
  • confusion
  • repeated vomiting
  • breathing problems

These symptoms could be the result of an electrolyte imbalance, or acidosis or alkalosis (where the acid or alkaline levels in the body’s fluids and tissues are abnormally high).
